A Pumpkin Dress

{No I do not have to pee, that is a very natural way to stand}
So to say the least Halloween is not my favorite holiday. There is nothing I like about it really except the little kids :) But this Halloween I had to go to something for work, so I was forced to dress up! Thankfully I found this dress on my friends blog and have a wonderful friend who can sew :) I am not into the whole "Its Halloween Yo! I should dress like a slut!" thing, and a I don't like dressing up as other people so I figured this was a nice alternative : )
This post is the FIRST time I have taken pictures of myself with the self timer to put on the blog.
So please enjoy and no laughing : )
I hope you all have a wonderful Halloween!
Wear turtlenecks! : ) Stay warm!
Did you dress up as anything tonight or over the weekend? I would love to hear about it!

I can do anything

I'm glad in God, far happier than you would ever guess. Happy that you're again showing such strong concern for me. Not that you ever quit praying and thinking about me. You just had no chance to show it. Actually, I don't have a sense of needing anything personally. I've learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I'm just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I've found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am. I don't mean that your help didn't mean a lot to me, it did. It was a beautiful thing that you came alongside me in my troubles.

Happy Sunday : )

Guest Post!...Fresh-Season

Please enjoy another guest post today! So happy to have Leanne on my blog, she has done so many cool things and is going to tell you all about one of them! Go check out her blog when you are done reading! : )

Hi everyone! *waves* I'm Leanne and I own the blog, Fresh-Season.com!
I am super excited to be writing a guest post for Kelli here at Daily Polkadots. Actually, I'm going to let you in on a little secret: this is only my second guest post ever {and I've been blogging for 12 years now...ouch!}. Sooo, hopefully I be able to keep you guys a little entertained with this post ;)
* * * * *
Monday, June 27, 2011 at 7:20AM. My blackberry alarm goes off. Immediately, my stomach does a flip {actually, more like a somersault}. The boyfriend-- who is next to me-- gives me an extra big hug as my 1 year old boxer pup lets out a yawn.
"I'm going to miss you...We're going to miss you" he tells me. "I know, Ken. I just can't think about it right now or I'll cry."
I was only home, in Ottawa, for six hours. I just got back from a 10 day trip in Florida. There were traces of sand still on my sandals. But I had to get up early, wipe the sand off, wash my clothes and pack a new set of clothes. I was leaving the country again. This time, I was going a little farther, a little longer, and by myself.
That Monday, I gave the boyfriend and my dog one last kiss. Butterflies were dancing in my stomach and at times, it was a little difficult to breath {and suck in my tears at the same time}. That Monday, I left Canada and headed off to the Russian Federation for two months.
Why?
Well, two months earlier, I received a letter from my department at school {I'm doing my M.A in European and Russian Studies}. I was being funded to spend the summer in Saint Petersburg, Russia to study Russian {at the time, I already had a year under my belt} and conduct research for my thesis. It was super hard leaving my boyfriend, my dog, and apartment behind... but this to me, was a dream. I study politics and conflict in the country...so common, of course I wanted to visit!
If I had to sum my trip up in one word, it would be: crazy! Russian society is completely different than ours in the West. The roads were chaotic. The buildings were entirely Soviet. The streets were full of old women selling fruits and flowers. Old men were stumbling around, drunk. Russian militia prowled the busy street, Nevsky Prospect. I only heard Russian, no English. No one smiled. Actually, I had several women roll their eyes at me when they first realized I spoke English. From then on, I kept my mouth shut and quietly observed what was once the center of the Soviet Union.
Over the next two months, I would learn that living in Russia would be both good and bad. I was delighted when I started to understand the language more. I began to respond to the locals in Russian. I started to figure what to eat and where to go. I visited the biggest museums in the country, stood where the Russian tsars lived, and witnessed a society so very different from ours.
I stepped out of my comfort zone.
One day, I decided to book a cheap flight to Moscow-- the capital. My Canadian friend Anna was living there and I wanted to see her {and of course, Red Square!}. I was a little hesitant. My father warned me not to go by myself.
In Russia, planes crash all of the time {mostly because they use out-of-date Soviet aircrafts}. Ships sink. Terrorist attacks happen frequently. I knew all of this too well since that's what I study. I study these terrorist attacks, and I know very well that Russia has a huge internal threat in the North Caucasus region.
But I booked the flight anyway.
My flight to Moscow was pretty quick {a little over a hour}, but if I said I was completely calm and not worried, I would be lying. I was extremely nervous. The plane was the smallest plane I ever seen. You could tell it was an older aircraft.
I buckled my seat belt and took a deep breath. Everything was going to be just fine. I then looked around at the other passengers. One old lady started to bless herself repeatedly. Oh, how my stomach sank at that very moment. I took another deep breath and closed my eyes. The plane took off. It was pretty rocky, and yes, I was super nervous. I'm pretty sure my heart was about to burst when I noticed 4-5 passengers texting on their cell phone! YES. TEXTING. While we were in the air! *Dies*
But, I made it...without any incident- thank God. I ended up staying with my friend Anna and her cousin and explored Moscow the whole weekend... I loved it! It was such an amazing experience {you can read about my trip to Moscow here and here}.
I'm really glad I went to Russia. Sure, there were bad days were I felt so isolated and wanted to run back home to my comfort zone. It happens-- that's life. But it was definitely an amazing and crazy experience!
“Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” - Mark Jenkins

Followers Fest!!

PhotobucketI keep reading about "October Followers Fest" so I figured why not join in! I am going to be linked up over at Much Love, Illy So you should go check it out and link up your fall post!

Because of work and school I do not get to enjoy relaxing fall days too often but I did get to enjoy one while Travis was home : )

In the morning we had breakfast at Real Food Cafe...BEST place for breakfast in Grand Rapids, even though I don't actually like breakfast : ) I do like their food a lot.

After breakfast we visited his grandparents then went to Cannonsburg {ski hill} to walk up the hill and take pictures of the trees, sadly we were not aloud to walk on the hill because of construction : (
After that we went to Meijer and got painting pumpkin supplies and beer!
I have decided painting a pumpkin is a WAY better idea than carving it!! : )
Incase you wanted to give it a try here is what you will need...
To make smaller dots I tried a Q-tip and a very small paintbrush but neither worked so instead I used the other end of the paint brush and it worked really well!

TA DA! The finished product...
Oh how I love Fall : )
Happy FRIDAY!!!

Kids are positive thinkers

I wish I had the optimism and positivity of a child.
They are easily entertained, they get to play for hours, and all they worry about is not getting to watch barney at least once a day!
Unless you are this little girl...then you worry that someone is going to forget you want pesto cavatapi so you tell everyone waiting in line, or you worry about why the little girl at the table next to us is eating with scissors (chopsticks).
This little girl is Georgia : )

Travis and I took her out for dinner at her restaurant of choice which naturally was Noodles and Company.
For those of you who do not know, Gergia's mom was my 8th grade teacher and I got the wonderful pleasure of hanging out with G every Tuesday and Thursday last year! You will quickly learn I really love to talk about her : ) she is pretty cool.
After dinner I watched her and Travis play in a tiny pile of leaves on the sidewalk in front of Noodles for a half hour. It was the definition of Childlike thinking. She was SO entertained and as you can see so was Travis : ) I loved watching how happy she was they were throwing the leaves over and over again, walking in circles kicking the leaves with her feet, and picking out the perfect ones to bring home to mom and dad. It was such a good reminder to enjoy the small things in life.
Nothing in life is so big that you shouldn't take a few minutes out of your day to throw some leaves in the air : )
It's hard to say which is better, children being easily entertained, or how children make grown men dance around in the Noodles parking lot.
Its so easy to get into a rhythm of schedules that we forget to have fun sometimes. And when you are forgetting to have fun you are MOST definitely not thinking positively enough!
So HAVE FUN throw some leaves!

Positive Thinking

This is something I am working on right now. I am a naturally negative person {unfortunately} so it is hard for me to be positive all of the time. It is especially hard for me when my boyfriend lives in Virginia, my best friend lives in Iowa, and I currently attend school which I hate. If I were to do what comes natural to me I would go home every day after work or school and sit in bed watching shows/blogging all night because that is just what is easy for me. But that IS NOT what I want.
I want to be someone who
is social
is positive
makes crafts
takes pictures
enjoys people
does not hideout when sad
smiles because its sunny
smiles because its rainy
thanks the Lord every morning for the day
enjoys life
all it has to offer!

So to help out with my positive thinking I found these : )

Excuse the language but sometimes swear words inspire me :)

I hope everyone has a SUPER HAPPY WEDNESDAY!! : )
